Brady Toops and Tom Clark share their music, art and stories at the Sept. Grove Gathering

Hey Friends,

So much to share about what the Lord is doing in the lives of the artists we are building relationships with. At our last Grove Gathering my friends Brady Toops & Tom Clark ministered through their art of music, live art and story with the community. What a powerful evening! Brady, Tom and myself have all personally benefited from the life and insights of Brennan Manning. Brady asked the community the question Brennan proposed, "To what degree did you fully receive the Love of the Father in this life?" vs. "What did you DO for the Lord?" Most Christians would not argue the fact the God loves them. They believe it is true. But ask them how the Love of God has changed them and continues to transform them, ask them what it means to them to RECEIVE and RESPOND to the Love of the Father and it's a different question really. It is for me. Review some of your favorite scriptural truths and you will find the Holy Spirit saying over and over again that LOVE, God's Agape Love is to be the environment and aroma of everything we DO in Jesus Name.I invite you to GROW in your ability to RECEIVE the Love of the Father, just like Jesus did, daily, and see how transformative it will be in your life, in your relationships and in your community.

Pastoring Artists

Grove Gatherings

Our Gatherings continue to blow my mind! It's hard to describe the "FAVOR OF GOD" that we are experiencing in our times together. Different CHEFs cook for us every month, artists share their art and their story of what they are seeing or experiencing in their lives in Christ. Artists from all over Southern California are connecting and sharing their lives with each other. All I can say is that the Holy Spirit is seasoning every meal, every conversation, every prayer, every story with HIMSELF. John 13:35 says, "By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." 1Peter 2:9-10 in The Message says, "But you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God's instruments to do His work and speak out for Him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference He made for you - from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted." God not only cares, but He activates and invites His kids to GO OUT with Him and reach every people group on the planet with His Good News of His love for them. Artists are a people group the Father is reaching out to. He has invited The Grove to join Him in GATHERING them, GROWING them and LOVING them.

Grove GetAways

Grove GetAway up in Big Bear

Our Grove GetAways are 3 days and 2 nights of extended times of community with a smaller group of artists as well as extended times of solitude with God in a retreat location. These investments of time away always produce great fruit in the lives of artists. We will be wrapping up our 2013 season with two more GetAways in Big Bear & Lake Elsinore. There are still available spots for these last two GetAways. Give me a shout or check them out at

One-on-One Mentoring over Coffee

The rest of my month is filled with one-on-one get-togethers with artists over coffee or tea. These are some of the best times of my month!

Truly I feel I get as much if not more from my time with these artists. Some are worship leaders, some are musicians, some are visual artists, some are tech directors, some are writers - books, blogs, film and all want a deeper life in Christ. I'd love to hear your story over a cup of coffee . . .really! Give me a call and we'll set up a time to meet.

Hearing vs Listening Workshops

I've begun a workshop for worship teams using In-Ear Monitors in partnership with Ultimate Ears. If you have ever had a difficult time hearing God, I'll show you how it is most likely a MIX problem. The worries of this world are on 11, the responsibilities you have at work and at church are always running through your mind - how come I can't hear God when I need Him most? In times of solitude, we "turn down the volume" of our mind to find that God has always been there trying to speak with us. Everything else just drowned Him out. In our workshop we discuss and learn the difference between HEARING and LISTENING, how to ask for and or build a monitor mix, less is more and other topics. It's a fun, insightful time for your teams and they can demo the BEST in In -Ear Monitors - Ultimate Ears. Contact me and also ask me about an "ARTIST" deal from UE for your team.

Fall Season FINALLY!

I dont know about you but August was SO UNUSUALLY HOT here in Southern California! Seems just this last week it finally cooled down started feeling like Fall. For a SO CAL native, I love when seasons change. I love the colors, I love the smells, I love how we all seem to KICK into a new rhythm come September. For my sons it means wetsuits for the cold water surf sessions in surf PE at school. It means our schedules have to change, disciplines need to kick in for study, alarm clocks for early start times and an unusually high degree of communication is needed just to coordinate drop-offs, pick-ups, stay-overs for school, sports and church. The Fall seems to equate to being INTENTIONAL.

My weekends are filled leading worship at a few great churches who have invited me. Such an honor to serve in this way. The boys are both very involved in their church youth group. This year they both have kicked into a wonderful new gear with the Lord. SO AWESOME! Christine and I are serving TOGETHER more than any other time in our marriage! She serves and loves with me at our Grove Gatherings and at the GetAways. While she also meets one-on-one with some ladies during the week, we also began serving together in a study on The Father's Love. I am SO MUCH BETTER when she is with me.

None of this kingdom work happens without a team of people

The work of pastoring and mentoring is really an investment of pouring my time and experience (aka my life in Christ) into the lives of people. I believe Jesus not only modeled selectively pouring into people's lives but He invited His followers to go and make disciples. Today we would call that mentoring and pastoring.

I am honored to be called to serve as a pastor and mentor, cultivating the spiritual growth and creative work of artists. And just like every local pastor, I am dependent upon the Lord to provide for my needs through people like yourself who generously invest through tithes and offerings. To those of you who invest into this ministry and my life, thank you. I hope you are encouraged by the fruit of your support. Thank you all for praying for me and our calling with The Grove Center in this great season of my life.

PRAISE REPORT: Last month, an additional $275 monthly was pledged and $900 was given as a single gifts! Please continue to pray with us for an additional $1725 monthly.

Your friend,
Roy

A Note from Joey O'Connor, Executive Director of The Grove.

Hello to all of Roy's friends, family and fans! I wanted to drop you a quick note to say what an incredible privilege it is to have Roy as a friend, board member and partner in ministry with The Grove. I want to personally say what a GREAT JOB he is doing! Right now, Roy is currently receiving only a portion of what he needs monthly in his ministry to artists. We are praying for Roy's level of support to increase by $2,000 per month. Your tax deductible monthly gift of $25 to $500 will help us reach this goal easily. You can also give him a single gift if you would like. As Roy is pouring his life into so many people, please take a moment to pray and see if you can help us support him, his family and the work of the ministry. God Bless you and thank you. Your gift is tax-deductible through The Grove Center for the Arts & Media, a 501c3 non-profit ministry.
